Retro Reading
While 'retro', 'vintage' and 'mid century' have been particularly fashionable and lucrative words to attach to clothing or home decor fashions in the last couple of years, sadly I have yet to see a revival in popularity of retro fiction.
Hit by a strange surge of nostalgia for my most loved books recently, I rediscovered John Wyndham's The Crysalids, published in 1955.
Don't let the cover fool you or put you off. John Wyndham's post-apocolyptic classic was so far ahead of its times, I cannot understand why savvy publishers haven't leapt to cash in on the huge success of Cormac McCarthy's The Road, and the buzz surrounding its impending film adaptation, by re-releasing John Wyndham's most popular and brilliant classics.
After re-loving The Crysalids, I immediately jumped on ebay and bought The Midwich Cuckoos (for $4... oh ebay how I love thee), which was adapted to the films Village of the Damned and, later, Children of the Corn. Although I've been warned that both films will mess with my head, if John Wyndham wrote it, I'm going to read it.
I strongly recommend that you get your hands on Wyndham's work. He'll entertain you while really making you think. The highest praise I have read for Wyndham's work is, "He is one of the few authors whose compulsive readability is a compliment to the intelligence.'
