Clinique's Cash for Comment

Clinique recently offered Voguettes the opportunity to trial their new mascara for free. I was lucky enough to receive a surprise package in the mail containing a tube of High Impact Mascara in black.

The accompanying letter asked triallers to post their review on the original thread, and the best review would win $300 worth of Clinique products. My first reaction was "Cool... I can write a very effective review. I love Clinique". And then that pesky little angel jumped on my shoulder and started whispering things like "Sixty Minutes... Cash for Comment... and (god forbid) Today Tonight."

So as much as the little devil on my other shoulder is seductively trying to appeal to my vanity and love of Clinique cosmetics, I have to give an honest review of the mascara and not just write a biased, glowing pitch in the hope of winning an expensive prize.

Before I show you the before and after pics of my trial of Clinique's High Impact Mascara, please excuse my puffy and slightly bloodshot eyes. I cried a bit last night and we all know how beautiful that makes us look the next day, right?

My review

Formula: As you can see, this mascara is absolutely fantastic at lengthening and separating my eyelashes. This takes a bit of effort though. I had to go over my lashes 5 or 6 times before any colour started to build up. However, I believe the fairly fluid formula (which I love because I find most mascaras thick and clumpy and quick to dry out) is exactly what gives that wonderfully separated, false eyelash effect.

Brush: I was very disappointed in the brush. It looks pretty cool and space age (kind of reminds me of the Olympic torches) but the too-long wand and too-long brush and its pronounced curve made this quite unwieldy and difficult to manouvre. I had to make an effort to not accidentally touch my nose with the wand, and the length and curve of the brush made it hard to apply quickly and easily, particularly on the lower lashes. I also found it nearly impossible to not get some mascara on my eyelids, and unfortunately have to deduct points for mascaras that do this.

Conclusion: While I absolutely LOVE the way this mascara lengthened and separated my eyelashes, overall I found it required too much of my attention and time. Its biggest drawbacks are the overly long wand and brush, and that the brush is too curved for easy use. However, it's biggest failure is not having bristles on both sides of the wand. A two-sided brush would make this SO much easier to apply.

If Clinique made the above changes, I would most definitely buy this product because I think the formula and the end result is outstanding.

good on you for being honest. i'm very surprised to hear that they offered a prize for the best review on vogue, and that vogue went along with it. one thing that i love about those forums is that you can go there for (what i thought were) unbiased reviews (for the most part).

makes you think again about the honesty of comments you read there.

Hey Alice,

I totally agree with you about the importance of the forums being unbiased. It really bothers me that girls on Vogue will read everyone's glowing reviews, thinking that they're getting real opinions. I will post my review but it will be interesting to see if VFP remove it or not, hey?

Thanks for your feedback! :)

I think it's pretty easy to determine that the comments left on vogue in relation to this product have been influenced by the receipt of the free product and from other factors encouraging positive reviews. If you're reading that thread then it's pretty obvious. It's a great advertising strategy for clinque and a good promotion for vogue so I can see why they have chosen this approach.

However you can also see that nowhere near 100 reviews have been left which may demonstrate that those who didn't like the product or that approach decided not to voice their opinion. I think that demonstrates that the majority of vogue forum users intend to voice their true opinions in regard to product/brand reviews and this promotion shouldn't discount the very many and very genuine comments made on the forum.
